The activity level for this tour:
You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.
You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.
You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.
You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

We were blessed with perfect weather. The lows were in the 40’s and the highs were in the mid-70’s. Everywhere we went, the colors were in full bloom. The towns we visited were each special in their own way. The recommendations for cafes, coffee shops, ice cream shops, restaurants and bars were all terrific. We managed to reach the top of Mt. Washington and the following day the top had 12” of snow. The tour manager made the trip all the more delightful with her detailed history of the regions we toured.

We were blessed with a wonderful group. I think I didn't have to see the Maple Syrup tour, But the Cider tour was wonderful. All the lovely scenery. The stop at the river was just what the doctor ordered!! There was always time to rest between stops.

It was a great trip, with beautiful scenery. To make it better, allow more time to eat and explore towns. So often, we were competing with other bus tours and cruise tourists, that we barely had time to grab any kind of food, so we could make it back to the bus. Definitely eliminate stop at Simon_Pearce. Food was so-so and prices for items were sky high. Glass blowers took a break just as we were going downstairs to watch. Would have much preferred more time outdoors.

Portland headlight light house and gift shop was so beautiful. The river cruise was spectacular on the Winnipesaukee N.H.. Mt. Washington was fun even if we didn't make it to the summit. Dianne's Bath was a favorite. Such beautiful scenery everywhere on the trip. Albony covered bridge. Rocky Gorge was so breathtaking. Rocks Estate, Ben and Jerry's, Simon Pierce, VonTrap. Qincey Market/Faneuil Hall is always a favorite .There is just was to many fun memories to list them all. There wasn't anything on the trip that was a let down. I loved the fact we had time to shop on our own and do a bit of off the path site seeing. The lodges were so warm and cozy and scenery from the windows was picture perfect. I tried new foods and getting to know new people. It was a blast! The best thing was from the moment I stepped on the bus I just struck up a conversation with people on the bus and it was like family from the start. I LOVED this trip! I would highly recommend it. I have already saw some of the people from the trip or texted or Facebooked with them. OH MY, my new friends with their lobster and bibs!! Loved it. I will be going on another trip with Collette.

My favorite was Stowe Vermont which was the home of the Von Trapp family. My least favorite was the long layover in Salt Lake City and I didn’t arrive in my hotel room till 12:30 am. Coming from the west coast that was very inconvenient and I would not do that again!

Traveling in New England, I expected to have the opportunity to experience local cuisine in our included meals. We did not have the opportunity to taste maple syrup on a pancake in Vermont. We did not have the opportunity to taste clams, lobster, etc., until the final evening. The White Mt Resort was beautiful! The Stowe Mt Resort was a bit dated, but it was obviously under renovations and the owners were great. The hotel in Portland was centrally located but needed a refresh. Our tour manager and bus driver were the best I have ever had. The Tour Manager was incredibly knowledgeable about the area. The bus driver was amazing and went above and beyond. I recommend that you return to the practice of the Tour Manager meeting large groups at the airport rather than giving direction to find the transfer vehicles.

Hotels in North Conway, NH & Portland, Maine were excellent! However, hotel in Stowe, VT brought my overall rating down due to room (had to move from 1st room that was at 78 degrees & could not be lowered by hotel staff) & dinner buffet (not the typical Collette high quality). Tour manager was exceptional! Favorite experiences were the stunning & expansive fall colors, especially in Vermont, and going to Mt. Washington summit!

Please keep Kennebunkport as a stop in itinerary. Wonderful, quaint little town with nice shops and restaurants. Beautiful area. *Accommodations: A couple of guests in my small group had issues with their room in Stowe which I didn't know until end of tour. I think overall, the Stoweflake Mtn. resort did their best to make guests as comfortable as possible. This resort was much better than the Eagle resort where I had escorted a group in 2019. Given the Stoweflake was being renovated, I think the staff did a great job. White Mountain is always the highlight of this tour.

We had a great variety of inclusions on the tour course not everybody likes everything. Our time in the cities seemed limited and allowed us mostly time to find some thing to eat for lunch but not really to explore the cities. I would say Mount Washington was the most memorable experience. The colors were limited the first couple days but then unbelievably dramatic the rest of the tour. I know timing of the leaves changing is always variable and different areas did have different amounts of color. I Our tour guide Paula was the best! As was our driver Don!

Christina was diligent, friendly, helpful, and interested in making the trip as delightful as possible. I appreciated that she came prepared with her own research and that she regularly communicated with other tour managers doing the same itinerary before/behind our group.

Great tour ruined by incompetent tour director - bus driver saves the day

Our local guides were fantastic! However our tour guide was incompetent. He left without guests 3 times! He gave incredibly confusing directions so no one knew what we were doing or when. He knew little about the area we were touring and offered little historic information. Even so, I really enjoyed the sites and accommodations, but the tour director was absurdly unorganized and really upset a lot of our traveling companions. Many ended up taking over his responsibilities to share information since we never received the same details twice from him. He forgot paperwork, and would start out speaking clearly, only to turn his back on people once he gathered people’s attention. He couldn’t get any establishment to turn off there music and couldn’t speak loud enough for anyone to hear him over the music. People complained, and he apologized for getting off to a rough start, but he didn’t change his approach. Fortunately, we also had a stellar bus driver who could count, looked after us and managed our luggage. She knew a lot about the area and tactfully filled in where our tour director was hopelessly confused and forgetful. I think she walked away with all of the tips that would normally go to a tour director as she clearly was doing all the work to look after us. I’ve never experienced anything like this on any tour I’ve been on! -

The tour was wonderful (ignoring the service). It isn’t receiving 5 stars because we had a couple stops that were in great areas where we had too little time - I’ve.1/2 hour to shop or sightsee (Kennebunk). On another day, we spent more than 2 hours at a single gift shop and cider mill (sans apple orchard).

I enjoyed the places we visited. Our tour guide was very helpful and fun. Our last hotel lost power due to bad weather. the first breakfast was only cereals and fruit. Next day we had a full breakfast buffet. We had the farewell dinner there. The lobby had a generator to provide this food. They did not offer any extras due to the inconvenience of no power. I think they could have offered some free drinks to compensate for the inconvenience. That was the hotel and not Collette. My disappointment with Collette was the transportation from Marshall to the airport and the return to Marshall. Premiere transportation was not large enough for the number of passengers. The luggage compartment did not hold all of the bags and several of the bags were in the bus. Coming back I was in a seat with my feet over the wheel well and I felt very cramped. Collette surely could have done better on this by providing a bigger bus.

Our walking tour guide in Boston, Jane, was excellent! I am so glad I did the walking tour of the Freedom Trail instead of the bus tour. It was well-paced, and I learned a great deal. I would have liked to have had similar historical and cultural information about the other areas we visited on this tour.

The tours were okay, though the bus itself was a bit cramped. The accommodations were excellent. The food in the included meals was very good, though the service was lacking in a couple of venues...waiting for an hour for a meal is a bit of a stretch in the US. The bus driver was amazing, and the guide knowledgeable (though he might speak a bit slower for those of us with hearing issues). The half-day spent at the Boston airport was very off-putting, as we missed a scheduled lunch at Kennebunkport.

We loved Boothbay, in particular and it would have been perfect except for the weather, and no hot water in our rooms because of the storm. That aside, we enjoyed it anyway. The accommodations were comfortable and the staff worked very hard during the power outage. The timing, however, after Columbus Day, was not great, as many of the shops in the town had closed after the holiday.

Worst tour guide ever. Had it not been for our bus driver, Mary Lou, we would have missed a lot of the sites. Hotels were good except the one in New Hamshire. The Red Jacket Inn is very dated and NOT what I'm used to staying in. We never received a printed tour update, which would have been helpful once we arrived in Boston. For the evening meals that were provided, we would have liked to have known ahead of time what the food would be so we wouldn't have the same thing for our noon meal. Also, when we were on our own for lunch, it would have been very helpful to have a list of places that were open for lunch instead of just walking till we finally found something open that wasn't already jammed with tourists.

This was an expensive tour - at least for us. It was a once in a lifetime vacation and the reason we invested with a travel agency is so we wouldn't have to worry. Well, our tour guide was so awful - we had numerous questions that went unanswered. Starting right off the bat - he didn't know where the bus would load the following morning when our tour was supposed to start.

Yes, I would travel with Collette again. The Dinner in Boston at the restaurant was awful. Poor service due to only 1 waitress. She should have gotten a big tip for having to do everything for 38 customers. The bus driver did not seem to know the roads and we went around and around, from New Hampshire to Vermont , 3 times. We were lost for a bit. We had to wait at the airport along time but did get to fly on the same plane as our congresswoman, Amy Klobachar. I experienced eating a lobster from the shell for the first and last time. I prefer mine out of the shell. I enjoyed our local tour guide when we walked the Freedom Trail, I enjoyed that morning.

Loved the Kancamgus byway and walk in area among the river and beautiful trees. Loved the covered bridges, old churches and lighthouses. Would have loved to have an added day and go into Acadia National Park.

We had a great time on this tour: very well organized; our tour guide was extremely helpful, always available and sensitive to individual needs, gave clear directions for what the day would look like; bus driver was professional and friendly, hotel accommodations were excellent; bus stops on the road were well planned alternating between utilizing rest areas and visiting interesting little towns nice size group (27); specific city guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. We caught the perfect week for experiencing fall colors. I have already spread the word to my friends that this was a great tour.

The Hotel in Boston was one block from a Fire Station and instead of sleeping I was listening to them come and go all-night . Because of poor time planning I was unable to have the time to see something I wished to see. We were told it was a traffic problem yet the sister tour had no problem with this. Hotel in Stowe we were 9 miles from Restaurants and the Restaurant at the resort was closed for a private party, again poor planning. Again in North Conway, NH at the Red Jacket Resort the Restaurant was booked for another Bus group we could eat at the BAR. at lease we could get to local restaurants. The Red Jacket Resort was very dated as well but did have a Great Breakfast setup.

Poor planning of the timing of the itinerary

Before I start with my review, I want to let you know that I have worked as a tour Director on motorcoach tours throughout the US and Canada for 15 years and I personally have conducted eight Fall Foliage tours. However, my husband and some friends had never seen the NE fall foliage and wanted to go. We chose this tour because of the itinerary that included 4 states, the Maine coastline, NH lakes region and the mountain areas of NH and VT. Also because Collette had a reputation as being one of the leaders in the tour business I thought it would be a really good choice for the first time motorcoach travelers. However, the timing of the tour was incredibly bad. The first day we left Boston at 8am, drove to Kennebunkport for a 30 minute break/shopping and then drove to Booth Bay for 1 3/4 hour lunch/shopping, took a harbor boat cruise and then drove back to Portland and went straight to the restaurant arriving about 6;30 -6:45 and finally made it to the hotel after dinner at about 8:30. The second day we left the hotel at 8:30 drove towards Lake Winnipesaukee via the town of Conway and arrived at the Lake for a boat cruise at 11:45. We never stopped for a morning break. Took the boat across the Lake for one hour, had lunch and shopping in Wolfboro for 1 l/2 hr and arrived at our hotel at 4:30. The third day we didn't leave hotel until 10am to go tour the Rock Estate but because we had to get there at 11am we didn't have time to stop for pictures of waterfalls or covered bridges, however we were back at the hotel by 3:30 in the afternoon. The Fourth day we left the hotel at 8 am to go to Vermont to tour Ben & Jerry's at 11 am, stopped for a restroom/coffee break enroute for 30 minutes and arrived at 11:20, missing our tour of Ben & Jerry. The tour director purchased an ice cream for each guest since we missed the tour which was nice. We left there and went to the Cold Hollow Apple Cider Mill arriving about 12:30 and were there until 2:30 with time for lunch (we had just eaten an ice cream cone????). Left there at 2:30, stopped at Quechee Gorge for 30 minutes and arrived in Woodstock at 4:30 and had 1 1/2 hours for shopping (most stores close at 5pm). Left there around 5:45 and drove to Manchester and arrived at the hotel around 7:30 pm. We were on our own for dinner that night also so most people ate at the hotel restaurant. The fifth day we left the hotel at 9 am, went to Hildene and toured there until 1 pm, and then went into Manchester for lunch and shopping until 3:30 and then back to the hotel. The sixth day we left Manchester at 8am and had a break/coffee enroute to Boston and arrived at Quincy Market at 12:45 for lunch, picked up a local TD for Boston Tour (she was excellent) and then arrived at hotel arrived 5pm. Left hotel at 6pm to go to dinner arriving back at hotel at 8:30. The days were either very rushed being a 10 for 12 hour day or not enough activity being only a 5-6 hour day.

The bus we were on was terrible. Very poor visaibility, the head rests were much too high, all you could see was the bright blue head rests in front of you. The only good seat was directly by the window. For being on a tour to see the country side, the type of bus was very disappointing. I paid a thousand extra dollars for going single, the room in the hotel in Boston, the BostonPark Plaza, was so small, the tiny,tiny bathroom. I complained, did no good. The tour guide was efficient, yet dull. The other tour I took with Collette was so much better. On this trip we spent most of time looking for places to eat lunch and dinner. For the money we paid, there should have had more dinners. I will certainly will think twice about taking another Collette tour.

An enjoyable trip, except for....

I never received a bill for final payment. The day before it was due, I called to ask a question to find out that my final payment was due the next day. I would have lost my air fare $1700+ and my trip deposit. Why didn't I receive a bill or an e-mail reminder?? Collett's had my e-mail since I got plenty of stuff for the portal page. The booklet with trip information is wrong. It said that the driver would meet you at the airport at the baggage claim with a "Collette" sign. Nope. We wandered around for an hour looking for him. We finally called the emergency # and were told we had to go to the garage. He must stay in the garage with the car and isn't allowed to enter the airport. Why didn't Collette send out an e-mail to our group, letting everyone know this????? The driver was running very late (he'd been waiting for us for an hour) and drove like a race car driver, getting lost for another 1 and 1/2 hours. Nearly had at least 2 accidents. We landed at 7:30 a.m. and got to the hotel at 10:00 a.m....not fun at all and not a good way to start a trip. We were starving and exhausted. Red Jacket Resort should be dropped from the trip. Bad food, cold showers (2 days for some people due to a broken or out or order furnace). After the first day, everyone was assured the hot water was working; not quite true. The Red Fox for dinner with the group was a cattle call. I ordered vegetarian lasagna and got a glop of cold cheese covering the entire dish (p.s. cheese is not vegetarian). Service was poor as was the food. I asked about wine and was told they had red and white...really? She did not want to return to the bar to find out was they had. When we got the bill for the wine, she was quick to ask if I needed change. That said, we loved Liz Quin and our bus driver, Phil Maleck (sp?). The group was fun, the colors were beautiful. Our bus was kept very clean by Phil (which we appreciated) and Liz was a great tour manager. Overall, we enjoyed the tour a great deal, but not the way everything was (mis)handled before hand or the limo-ride-from-hell from the airport to the hotel..

Our trip was 9/30-10/8//17. Colors became prettier as we moved north. New Hampshire and Maine were very nice. Loved eating at the first restaurant in American, The Union Oyster House in Boston. The North Church in Boston was beautiful (Paul Revere saw the lantern from this Church). The small towns throughout the tour were beautiful. Stowe, Vermont and Boothbay Harbor, Maine were lovely (also the two nicest places we stayed: Stowe Mountain Lodge and Spruce Point Inn, Resort and Spa.)

The Guide and Bus driver were outstanding. Checking in at Boston at the hotel was confusing and took extra time finding the Tour guide in the Lobby. Bus tour of Boston was too short and the line to get into the Paul Revere Church was to much waiting in line. The afternoon tour to Salem lunch was very nice but the local guide did not cover the Salem trials and spent way to much time talking before he was dismissed and we went into the House of seven gables. Vermont was very nice and the Hotel was great. The last day when we were dropped off in the rain for two hours of free time with all the shops closed. My wife was sick for the following week. The final dinner was a big disappointment. The Lobster was the best food but all the sides were not.

Cook to order, for the price of that resort it should have been better. Lobster dinner was not great. Sooner would have stayed in Kennybunkport rather than driving to see a highway. would liked to have had 2 days is Boston and on Sunday Ben and Jerrys was not operating waste of time.

We arrived in Vermont and New Hampshire at the right time to capture the true fall colors. Plenty of stops along the way to appreciate the local layout.

Every thing about this trip was outstanding!! It covered SO much! Our tour guide was VERY knowledgeable - it was quite an education!! Our bus driver was excellent - the ride was comfortable. Truly an excellent experience, and I will recommend Collette to ALL my friends and family!!
